RESEARCH
RESEARCH GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
My research interest and experience is focused on synthesis
and characterizations of functional nano- and micro-structures with novel
electronic and photonic properties. The research activities involve inorganic
and organic semiconductors synthesis, surface chemistry, nano-
and micro-pattern assemblies. Photo-electrochemical techniques will be used as
characterization tools for fundamental heterogeneous charge transfer and
photo-physical process. In particular, studying how fundamental physical quanta
– electrons, photons and phonons are coupled to each other in the nanometer
scale and it can be manipulated to serve technological applications.
Possible applications are in inorganic/organic semiconductors
interfaces (IOI), nano-structured inorganic solar cells, thin solid oxide fuel
cells, and Hydrogen production. This research can be multidisciplinary in
nature. This will maintain comprehensive experimental facilities for growth and
analysis.
Undergraduate research:
Based on my current and previous experience, my goal is
to develop an active research program in the
field of electrochemistry for undergraduates. This is to practice my
belief that the true teaching of chemistry should result in students becoming
creators of knowledge, not merely consumers. I have
been an URSI (Undergraduate Research Summer Institute) mentor for ten
years, and have worked with a variety of students on electrochemical
applications. My students have gone on to submit their papers to
professional and international journals as evidence of this belief. It is
my hope that I have modeled those behaviors which will transform undergraduates
into researchers. My undergraduate research approach requires the
involvement of excellent students in:1-
reproducing previous research work which allows them to understand what
has been done before and 2- link this known research to further creative
work. My objective is to allow a student to see the worth of his/her
research effort via marketable applications in industrial and academic research
areas.
The following is a summary of
my research effort since 1972:
1991-Present Research
project on the electrochemistry of thin solid films with redox centers. Special
interest in electrochemical behavior of free and
immobilized polyoxometalates, hexacyanometalates,
and organic polymers as well in aqueous and mixed solvent electrolytes.
Photo, Electro-catalytic activities of these systems are also under
investigation. Projects on electrochemical application
of chemically modified electrodes as biosensors (enzyme electrodes).
Continued the use of modified electrodes in electro-analysis
and electro-catalysis.
1989-1990.
Electrochemical studies (Purdue University, West Lafayette) on lipophile exchange membranes as electro-active assemblies
on the electrode surface.
1988-1989. NSF research project (IUPUI, Indianapolis) in characterization
of electrochemical behavior of transition metal complexes. Dynamic voltammetric techniques, and chemically
modified electrodes were used to characterize rates and mechanisms of electrode
reactions.
1986-1988. Research
project at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) on applications of modified
electrodes in trace analysis; coordination trends, selectivity and sensitivity
of such electrodes were also studied. Photoelectrochemical studies of native
and modified semiconductor electrodes for solar energy conversion. The
quantum conversion efficiencies of photoelectrochemical cells were also
characterized
1983-1986. Collaborative research work with the Ministry of Industry
and Al-Fateh University (Tripoli, Libya) on the electrical
properties of inorganic phosphates and their polymers. The polymers of either Ti or Zr
phosphate, or mixed metal phosphates were prepared and investigated with
respect to their electrical conductivity.
1978-1983. Collaborative research work at Assiut University in
electro-organic synthesis of some organic acids and esters, and electroreduction of ketones using surface derivatized electrodes. Designed electrodes for biological
and organic solutions. Studied non-toxic baths for electrodeposition of
some transition metals. Co-operative research project
with Industrial & Financial Co.(Quna,
Egypt) in the corrosion studies of some of their products (metals and
alloys). Co-supervised two M.Sc. theses.
1975-1978. Anodic
preparation of bulk and surface attached films of oxides on Al and Al-Mn alloys in organic and inorganic acid
baths. These systems were characterized by X-ray diffraction and by
electrochemical instrumentation. Thermodynamic functions were calculated
from the data analysis of temperature variations in these systems.
Possible applications for preparation of porous
and micro-electrodes, as well as ceramics were also investigated.
1972-1975. Electrodeposition of some binary alloys of Cd-Ni. The study which was a part of my M.Sc
degree covered the analytical and physical aspects of the electroplating process. Anticorrosion properties of these alloys
under marine environments were also investigated.
